Background of the Study
Folklore has long served as a repository of communal wisdom and a vital means of preserving cultural heritage in Esan Central Local Government, Edo State. Narratives, myths, proverbs, and traditional songs encapsulate the historical experiences and values of communities (Omo, 2023). In a rapidly globalizing world, the role of folklore in maintaining cultural identity is increasingly significant. Folklore not only educates younger generations about their cultural roots but also reinforces social cohesion and community pride (Akin, 2024). Digital media have opened new avenues for disseminating these traditional stories, though challenges remain in ensuring authenticity and preventing cultural dilution. The interplay between traditional oral traditions and modern communication channels provides a unique context for analyzing how folklore continues to shape cultural heritage and identity (Eghosa, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite its cultural significance, the preservation of folklore in Esan Central faces challenges from modern influences and diminishing oral traditions. There is a lack of systematic efforts to document and promote traditional narratives, leading to concerns about cultural erosion. The problem is compounded by limited intergenerational transmission and the risk of folklore losing its contextual meaning. A detailed investigation is needed to assess the current role of folklore in preserving cultural heritage and to propose measures to sustain these traditions (Igbinovia, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To evaluate the role of folklore in preserving cultural heritage.
  • To document key elements of folklore in Esan Central.
  • To propose strategies for enhancing the transmission of traditional narratives.

Research Questions:

  • How does folklore contribute to cultural heritage preservation in Esan Central?
  • What are the key elements of local folklore that reflect cultural identity?
  • What measures can enhance the preservation and transmission of folklore?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H₁: Folklore plays a significant role in maintaining cultural heritage in Esan Central.
  • H₂: There is a positive relationship between the transmission of folklore and cultural identity.
  • H₃: Community initiatives are effective in preserving traditional narratives.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it highlights the importance of folklore in safeguarding cultural heritage. The insights will inform cultural preservation strategies and educational programs aimed at sustaining traditional narratives in Esan Central (Osarhiemen, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to the role of folklore in preserving cultural heritage in Esan Central Local Government, Edo State, excluding other forms of cultural expression.
